Shannon Hoon was the next big thing.
He was the lead singer of 90’s rock band Blind Melon and on top of the rock world when their self-titled album and song “No Rain” both hit #1 on the charts in 1993. Hoon also was invited by Axl Rose to be a vocalist on Guns n’ Roses’ “Use Your Illusion” albums, even appearing in the band’s “Don’t Cry” video. The band released their second album, “Soup” in 1995 and their latest single “Galaxie” was climbing the charts. Things were looking up for the group… until they weren’t.
Shannon Hoon died of a drug overdose in October of 1995, eight weeks after “Soup” was released. And that could have easily been the end of the story if it wasn’t for Hoon himself. He had been documenting his life with a video camera throughout the rise of the band up until right before his death. And now a group of filmmakers have edited together the extensive amount of Hoon’s footage to create a unique documentary about the musician using Hoon’s own words to tell his story.
“All I Can Say” is available now on many streaming services. And you can request Blind Melon’s “No Rain” weekdays on the Old School Lunch at noon.
