Decker and Big Jake had the chance to chat with Shinedown guitarist Zach Myers ahead of the band’s upcoming North American tour and album release. Shinedown has been very open with the inspiration behind their upcoming album, titled Planet Zero, citing recent social trends at the forefront of the album’s theme. When asked about the overarching theme of the album and what events may have inspired it, Myers did not hold back.
“This album is a warning. If we keep going this way, this is going to be this weird, dystopian, ‘Escape From LA’ type world where there’s no boundaries for anything and the media can get on there and lie about anything.”
Sonically, the first two singles “Planet Zero” and “The Saints Of Violence And Innuendo” have very heavy, dry elements. Many fans have speculated that the musical direction of the album will take the band back to their heavy, in-your-face sound. Myers confirmed these claims and gave some info regarding one of their unreleased tracks.
“There’s one song that’s probably the heaviest ‘poppy’ type song we’ve ever written. It’s only poppy because of the sounds in it but it’s still heavy. That song is ‘Sure Is Fun’. Lyrically, it’s one of my favorites that we’ve written in a long time because it’s very satirical, and poking fun at the media and the world that we live in right now.”
Myers revealed some of the lyrics from their unreleased single “Sure Is Fun”.
“Keep bangin’ on the big bass drum while the aliens are comin’ but we’re staring at the sun. It’s the end of the world but it’s so much fun.”
Always great talking to Zach Myers. Shinedown will be at the Resch Center in Green Bay on Friday, April 8th. Check out the full interview!
