This week is a momentous week for a number of reasons, but at the top of that list is Creed kicking off their Summer Of ’99 tour at the Resch Center in Green Bay on Wednesday. Scott Stapp came to the studio to talk about what the tour means for the band and what it’s like to embark on this journey.
‘We picked up where we left off except more mature, wiser, you know we’ve all grown as human beings and there’s just a really good vibe with the band and we’re excited about the show…the experience the fans are going to have at the show, so it’s nothing but excitement.’
When I asked about the show itself Scott tells fans to “prepare yourselves”.
‘So come prepared to get lost in the experience of the show, with the music accompanying it.’
We talked about the rise and perceived fall of Creed back in the early 00’s and Scott had an interesting take.
‘The tickets never stopped. It was what I like to call the ‘critical media’ that kind of created that narrative, but that wasn’t indicative of the reality of what was going on on the ground. Same with Nickelback, they getting all that hate, but their selling out three nights, just like Creed, at every arena in America moving into stadiums, you know it was just a narrative perpetuated by the media which I think looking back I honestly think Creed and what we were about and the things we were talking about I don’t think fit into the narrative that the powers at be wanted communicated through the rock genre at the time. And so that was kind of the discrediting campaign.’
Asking why he thinks Creed is back in the mainstream Scott continues.
‘But to see things come around and it seems like Creed and what we’re all about, what our music is all about kind of perfectly aligned with what is going on in the world and what people’s mindsets are…harkening back to a time when Razor started in those good times and those good memories…it’s fun to see it come full circle, no pun intended (our fourth album is called Full Circle) it’s just incredible and I’m just glad to be a part of the ride.’
We talked about his new solo record Higher Power how it came to be, how he was able to take time to write it, going into the studio when he felt compelled to do so about what was happening at the exact moment in time. He said it was a very difficult time to be an artist but having the outlet of music saved him. He also says that this is the proudest he has ever been of a record.
Obviously I asked if there will be any new Creed and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen. Scott says he wants to see how the tour pans out and move from there. I asked what his favorite song wasn’t a hit but his favorite to sing and without missing a beat he said “Faceless Man”. Summer Of 99 Tour kicks off in Green Bay on July 17th.
