Dorothy released her latest track ‘Mud’ on July 19th, two days before that she stopped by the studio to talk about how the song came to be. She credits Scott Stevens for bringing the song to her and cites In This Moment as a major source of inspiration for this track. When I asked what she wanted out of the track she said this.
‘I was thinking the morning of, I hadn’t heard the song yet…and thought I really wanna do something new with my voice that I’ve never done. So I put that intention out there and I went in the studio and (Scott Stevens) was like, “Hey what do you think about this song?” And he played it for me and I had this visceral reaction in my body and I was like, “This is freaking great!” People are going to fight to this, people are gonna work out to this people are going to party to this. And then I ended up doing a scream and I was like “I hope you were recording that!” And he was, of course because he’s a professional.’
I asked what influenced her vocal choices on the track and she explained her admiration for Maria Brink of In This Moment.
‘She’s amazing! And I was like dang, I wish I could do that. And it kind of just happened, it clicked, I figured it out… now I’ve gone down this rabbit hole of figuring out how to scream and use vocal fry because your voice it can have so many different elements to it and a real master knows how to use those different paints, it’s like Bob Ross and happy accidents, you know, I was ‘oh look at this paint color I just threw in there.’
Dorothy has been busy doing many features on other bands songs including, Slash, Nita Strauss, Staind and most recently Scott Stapp. I asked her how she decides to do the track.
‘When people reach out I’m honest I wear my heart on my sleeve, like if I don’t like the song or I’m not feeling it…it’s tough for me to fake it. And if I love the song and I love the artist, it’s a no brainer.’
We continue to talk about ‘Mud’ and how country music shaped her, how she learned how to sing along with the yodeling of Leann Rhimes and the fact she’s been wearing cowboy boots on stage since the very beginning. While we may not see Dorothy on stage right now, we will see her soon, she promised.
