Emma from Dying Wish took some time away from the studio to talk to me about what’s next for the band. We talked about the reception of Symptoms Of Survival and how she feels the band has evolved since the release.
`It’s weird because once it’s out it’s new to everyone else but it’s not new to you anymore…We’ve been playing and touring on these songs a lot and I think it was really important for us to make that as our second record, to take that extra step to where we are and I’m really proud of the songs on it. But I feel like a lot of the art that we wrote on that record we kind of feel like that will be the last time we do something like that for a while…We kind of mastered some of the tricks on Symptoms that we tried on Fragments…and so it’s kind like what’s next? And that’s really exciting for us.’
We dive into their latest single ‘I Brought You My Soul (Your World brought Me Despair)’ and how that song encapsulates the sound of the new record.
‘I love that song! In a lot of ways it’s kind of like the perfect snapshot of where the band is at right now…The heavy parts are even heavier and the melodic parts are catchier…we were able to do a lot of cool stuff. We worked with Will Putney for the first time on that…we just finished a record right before shooting the video…It’s gonna be different but I think that everyone is excited about something fresh and we’re definitely leaning into “this is what Dying Wish is all about”. It’s not just about the metalcore tropes that have used as inspiration…More of like making a statement of this is what we’re all about.’
We continue the chat about the band and their evolution. Emma says there’s more singing on this record than the first two.
‘There is a lot more singing on the record and I’m a singer first and foremost, I’ve been singing forever, screaming is newer to me and so people, I think, will automatically hear it and say “oh they’re selling out!” But that’s just the kind of music we want to make and with the different things my voice can do, all the tools that I have, I just think we’re able to do things unique to anyone else. It’s dark for sure…it’s heavier and the melodic parts are better in my opinion and I think people are going to really enjoy it.’
We talk about some very important issues to Emma and the rest of Dying Wish including seeing more diversity in shows, getting young people involved in the live shows, embracing diversity and the Israel and Palestine conflict.
The last part of the previous paragraph go hand in hand with one of the heavy albums that she listened to as inspiration. That album was Ashes Of The Wake by Lamb Of God. She says this is the first time she writes about religion in her music and it “definitely feels more personal” in the scale of political and world wide issues.
Dying Wish will be on tour with Spiritbox and Loathe this Spring with a stop in Madison on April 26th which is sold out.
