Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox talks about the bands latest album Tsunami Sea and how this album was so autobiographical for her. The main theme of the album is isolation and depression. She says this.
‘Those feelings that make you feel extremely isloated, which is also what the album is about…it turns out that it’s a very universal feeling. So it’s weird something that makes you feel so alone is actually…brings out a lot of empathy and a lot of people relate to it.’
We also talked a little about how hard it is to talk about mental health and that having a piece of art to help express the words we can’t say can be incredibly therapeutic.
‘A lot of people don’t want to talk about their mental health and I certainly don’t! Not even like me promoting my album but also it’s just hard to deal with, so I’m still learning and unfortunately…some of the stuff I’m saying resonates with a lot of people.’
Production of this album is something that I was very curious about because for as much as the “Sea” themes were apparent in the lyrics, there were times when it felt like drowning while listening to the record.
‘The same way that I can explain myself to anyone is singing and writing lyrics and it’s the only way I can express myself. The only way Michael is able to express himself outwardly is through music. So every little sound…he’s like me he has difficulty expressing or feeling ashamed of the sadness or anger or isolation and so he, just like I do the singing parts, every single piece of music you are hearing every single little noise is like so intentional by him to be like a vehicle for what I’m saying to come across like the subconsciousness part. My part is like the conscious part that you’re going to absorb and then Michael is like always trying to push subconsciously that message within the musical part.’
We wrap up talking the tour that features Courtney’s favorite heavy band Loathe as well as friend of the program Dying Wish.
